Readiness level refers to where a student lies on the continuum of a standard.  Many kids come in almost experts at something and many students come in with absolutely no prior knowledge about a subject.  We need to stop teaching to the middle because we are losing students at both ends.  Teachers really need to use a pre-assessment to find out what students already know or don't know and what misconceptions they might have.  Teachers then need to create tiered lessons based on the students' readiness levels. The idea is that if we meet students where they are, we can then strategically move them further and further along the road to mastery.
